Students will focus on how ceramics can be used to create functional artwork and how clay has been utilized by various cultures around the world for thousands of years.

We will focus on the following techniques: wedging, slab, coil and slipping and scoring. All of which will be demonstrated in class.

Students will then use these techniques to create a themed flower pot or vase that is both fully functional and aesthetically pleasing and/or interesting. The piece have a recognizable theme (i.e. person, animal, recognizable object) that contains 3D elements.

The finished piece will go through a bisque firing and then be glazed and fired again.

Along with creating a vessel, students will focus on the difference between art and design and the marketing aspect of design. They will fill out a marketing workshop and create a color illustration for their piece as if they were selling a product.
