Mrs. O’Neill’s Art Classes

Just another WordPress.com weblog

AP Studio Art June 4, 2008

The AP Studio Art course is an intensive art course, so students enrolled in this course will receive a double period of art.  Students will be given a series of conceptual projects, including those given to them to do over the summer, and they will also select a concentration subject, from which they will develop a body of work.  The work must be photographed, so that students can have slides made from their work and a select number of pieces must also be mailed to the College Board to be rated in May.  Not only can students in this course achieve college credits, but their average in the course is increased by 10%, which improves their GPA.

Students will be expected to put in extra time outside of class and present a written proposal and log for their concentration (in addition to their visual investigation of their chosen subject matter).  I strongly encourage them to try a range of mediums and techniques when developing their portfolio for this course. Students will have to mail in 5 that show their best skill and a variety or techinques. These piece must be between 8″ x 10″ and 18″ x 24″ in size (they must also be flat i.e. paper, canvas board, illustration board, cardboard – no streched canvas).  In addition to this 2 sets of slides must be sent in:

The first set will contain 12 digital images the progression from student’s contentration (there maybe be more than 1 slide of a piece if one of the slides shows the full piece and another shows a detail from the piece).

The second set will contain 12 digital images on a disk for the breadth section, which shows a variety of techniques, themes and problems.

Each student will be asked to maintain a blog, which will show case their artwork and write about their process.  I will then attach each students blog to mine, so that they are easily accessible.

Gateway supplies the majority of the art supplies needed, but all Art I students are required to purchase the following:

1 – sketchbook

1 – notebook

They are also responsible for the shipping of their work to College Board and for the cost of developing their slides

If there are any other supplies that students would like to use that we do not available or prefer to have their own supplies, we will have a place to keep them within the classroom, but that is not necessary.

students are also expected to bring a pencil to class.

If there are any questions or concerns – please feel free to e-mail me.

The Grading system for the Art Department is as follows:

Primary Grades        60% (this includes major projects, test and long term homework assignments)

Secondary Grades   30% (this includes quizzes, small scale projects and weekly lab grades)

Support Grades       10%(this includes homework and warm up grades)

As far as grading goes, in class projects hold the most weight, but it is important that students finish all assignments on time, whether that means bring assignments home or staying after school.  I am always willing to stay after school or let students come during study halls to work on assignments.  I am also willing to let them borrow supplies to take home in order to finish their work.

I normally only assign 1 or 2 homework assignments per marking period and give students several weeks to work on them, so I generally grade them as primary or secondary assignments, due to the amount of time they are give.

Students are given a weekly lab grade based on their work ethic, clean up and following classroom policies and procedures. (these are secondary grades)

Students are given daily warm ups, which are graded every 2 weeks. (these are support grades)

Additional Info:

I will be sending home permission slips to all parents/guardians so that I can showcase some of the students’ work on this site through out the year.  I like to hold on to their work, so that they have it for out end of the year art show.  If for some reason you do not receive a slip, let me know and I can e-mail one to you.

Also, we are always in need of extra supplies - we maybe able to turn your trash into our treasure! (i.e. paper plates, magazines, empty containers or jars, Coffee Cans, aluminum foil, freezer wrap, old hardback books, large cardboard boxes, old toys, dolls or junk (anything that might be used for us to draw or paint in still life or other activities) old wooden furniture - or if there is anything you think we could use that you are planning on getting rid of - let me know or send it)

Hope this helps!  Contact me if you have any questions! I’m looking forward to a great 2009-10 school year!
