Mrs. O’Neill’s Art Classes

Just another WordPress.com weblog

Art III July 29, 2008

This course allows students to continue to learn and explore different artistic techniques, but also has a strong focus having students develop their own style and “voice” through their artwork.  Students will work with new mediums (i.e. oil painting, screen printing), but they will also be given broader topic in several assignment so that they can begin to determine the direction and mediums that they wish to pursue with their artwork.  Students will also begin to have a heavier focus on communicating the ideas and process of their artwork, both through writing and verbal discussions.

Students will be required to document their artistic process either through written documentation, pictures and sketches or through the development of their own blog.

Supplies, Grading, Etc.

Gateway supplies the majority of the art supplies needed, but all Art I students are required to purchase the following:

1 – sketchbook (at least 8″ x 10″)

1 – notebook

1 – tube of white acrylic paint

students are also expected to bring a pencil to class.

If there are any questions or concerns – please feel free to e-mail me.

The Grading system for the Art Department is as follows:

Primary Grades        60% (this includes major projects, test and long term homework assignments)

Secondary Grades   30% (this includes quizzes, small scale projects and weekly lab grades)

Support Grades       10%(this includes homework and warm up grades)

As far as grading goes, in class projects hold the most weight, but it is important that students finish all assignments on time, whether that means bring assignments home or staying after school.  I am always willing to stay after school or let students come during study halls to work on assignments.  I am also willing to let them borrow supplies to take home in order to finish their work.

I normally only assign 1 or 2 homework assignments per marking period and give students several weeks to work on them, so I generally grade them as primary or secondary assignments, due to the amount of time they are give.

Students are given a weekly lab grade based on their work ethic, clean up and following classroom policies and procedures. (these are secondary grades)

Students are given daily warm ups, which are graded every 2 weeks. (these are support grades)

Additional Info:

I will be sending home permission slips to all parents/guardians so that I can showcase some of the students’ work on this site throughout the year.  I like to hold on to their work, so that they have it for out end of the year art show.  If for some reason you do not receive a slip, let me know and I can e-mail one to you.

Also, we are always in need of extra supplies - we maybe able to turn your trash into our treasure! (i.e. paper plates, magazines, empty containers or jars, coffee cans, aluminum foil, freezer wrap, old hardback books, large cardboard boxes, old toys, dolls or junk (anything that might be used for us to draw or paint in still life or other activities), old wooden furniture - or if there is anything you think we could use that you are planning on getting rid of - let me know or send it)

Hope this helps!  Contact me if you have any questions! I’m looking forward to a great 2009-10 school year!
